Palace Hotel -

You won’t find many walls at The Palace Hotel that aren’t covered in old wallpaper or hand-painted murals. The story goes that in the 80s the former owner, Mario, painted a copy of a Botticelli’s work on the ceiling, and said he would give $1000 to whoever could paint the opposing wall as well.

An indigenous artist called Gordon Wayne from Port Augusta agreed to the challenge, and painted the wall in the front bar in less than eight hours to show what he could do. Mario loved his work, and Gordon ended up painting almost all the walls in the main hall over the years, which remain intact to this day. Mario hand stencilled the wallpaper himself, which run through the hallways of the Palace.
